003 → If There Is No Sun

contemporary dance composer/music production

Cracks open up in languages speaking of Africa and Europe, of body-territories, and of oppressive borders. Attempts are made to share dreams and desires, and a sense of estrangement. There is a desire to free oneself from one’s ghosts. On land, at sea, among other creatures, a new community emerges from its state of invisibility and embarks on a journey that is sometimes a discourse, sometimes a struggle.

In this journey, the edges of individual portraits dissolve, and a larger organism emerges, advancing by insinuating itself among different landscapes. Boundaries blur from the one to the many as the environment is traversed and disrupted.

The dialogue between vision, movement, and sound adapts and readjusts with each passage, like after an earthquake, when shattered certainties need to be rebuilt. With the words if – there – is – no – sun, those who preceded us and ignited other suns are evoked, imagining new possible humanities.

"Let us arrive in that place in the midst of our dreams, where all the lights are ours. Let our voice be our food. May our thoughts be muscular. Let us trudge through our sea."

  • translated and reinterpreted excerpts, starting from Ladan Osman Refusing Eurydice (Exiles of Eden-Coffee House Press 2019)

«.. It is organically a concept-opera, it is a story made up of many universes, it is ... the Black Culture of an afrofuturism from post-industrial Detroit (the reference is to Drexciya), to its urban districts, to aquatic myths, amphibians (as the potential to be both one and the other, both one and the other, individual and community) and to techno, as a political glue that reworks everything... Languages and sounds shatter boundaries, the one in the many are the bodies of landings in a land made of sea and metaphors of going in this superb and... overwhelmingly anarchic work. Great performance by the performers ...

«..A work sustained by a driving sonic fabric that weaves texts, singing, and movement with a happily non-trivial rhythm: the desire for redemption, the still-alive prejudices about being black, derision, the absence of freedom, the spiritual struggle emerge in the words, but above all in the corrosive work on the bodies. We see them ... powerful in the dynamic, proactive scratch of the body, driven by Brinchi's videos and the pulsating colorful lights ...
    Francesca Pedroni - Il Manifesto

«.. A new and very precise idea of the world, where one can listen while following a general flow and at the same time can respect and value the different artistic, social, and political peculiarities ...
