The rise in sea levels is one of the effects of climate change. Since 1880, the average sea level has risen by over 20 cm. Each year, the sea level increases by about 3.2 mm. Research published on February 15, 2022, shows that sea level rise is accelerating and is expected to reach 0.3 meters by 2050.
This means that the increase expected over the next 30 years corresponds to the rise recorded over the past century, according to the latest technical data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which updates the 2017 projections with estimates that are now the most accurate available.
When sea levels rise at the pace shown in recent years, even a small increase can have devastating effects on coastal habitats moving inland: destructive erosion, flooding of wetlands, contamination of groundwater and farmland with saltwater, and the loss of habitats for fish, birds, and plants. The rise in sea levels is coinciding with more dangerous hurricanes and typhoons, which move more slowly and release more rain, contributing to generating more powerful storm surges that sweep away everything in their path.
Building on these premises, the work proposes an audiovisual journey that goes beyond merely narrating the issues of climate change and the resulting rise in ocean levels. It aims to transport the audience into an immersive and multisensory experience that engages the viewer in a process of awareness regarding the topics addressed.
In creating this installation, Brinchi and Span, in addition to drawing on high-resolution images from NASA's archive that tragically depict the shrinking coastlines around the world, develop a series of generative images capable of evoking the evolution of water, its transformations, from a single drop to ice, to tornadoes, and hurricanes.
